    Dear MNSoc folks,

I would like to invite all of you to a planning meeting to set up a group to replace the Twin Cities chapter of the Victorian Society, which was shut down by our national organization this summer. I am not sure if this is the correct spot to post this, but here is a copy of the email I sent to everybody on our email list. Feel free to edit if needed.

Dear Former Victorian Society Members and Friends,

I would like to invite you all to a planning meeting to set up a new organization to replace the late and lamented Northstar Chapter of the Victorian Society. There was enough response to my previous emails to indicate interest in this, so I have gone ahead and arranged a time and a place when we can meet.

    Date: Sunday, November 13th.
    Time: 3 pm.
    Location: the Triune Masonic Lodge.

We will be needing to do things like choosing a new name for ourselves, deciding whether we want to be a legitimate non-profit with a tax-exempt status (and therefore eligibility for grants and other desirable things), coming up with by-laws, electing a board, and deciding what focus this group should have and what types of events we should put on. The impression I got from all of your emails is that most people want something very similar to the old Northstar Chapter, just under a new name and with no obligation to send our hard-earned money to a national organization. 😉 We have a copy of the old by-laws to use as a jumping-off point, which should make coming up with new ones a snap. We will need people to be willing to be on the board and help with the planning and coordinating of events, just as we did before. In recent years folks have been great about stepping up and helping out, and I am confident that we can pull this off and come out on the other side with a fantastic group that does really fun things.

Now, the catch (you knew there was going to be one): We need people to show up for this meeting, or, if they have other commitments (which is both inevitable and perfectly understandable) to send an email expressing their regrets at being unable to attend and their willingness to pitch in with things, moving forward. Please, please, please, reply to this email with a quick couple of lines indicating either that you’ll be there, or that you’d love to but can’t and are willing to help us get this thing up and moving at a time that works better for you. Should there just be too many folks who can’t make this date, we can reschedule, but we need to get this done before too much longer, if it’s going to happen at all.

There are groups like us scattered all over the country. Every one, without fail, only exists as long as there are people willing to participate, even if all they can do is attend events and can’t do much as far as planning. Everybody’s busy sometimes, and has spare time available at other times. If there’s going to be a New and Improved Northstar Chapter, we all need each other to pitch in and show their support. I know we can do this, and I hope to hear from all of you soon.
