UPCOMING MNSOC CLASSES
October
Carol’s Steampunk Hat Class
Date: Sunday, October 9th
Time: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Place: Textile Center of MN
Teachers: Carol Strand
Cost: MNSOC Members $25 / Non-Members $30
Come make a tiny top hat or a mini tricorn to complete your costume ensemble. These can be done completely by hand but a sewing machine is helpful. Supply fee of $5 includes heavy weight interfacing, patterns and some trims, bits and bobs. Please bring a sewing kit, including needle nose pliers. Fabric (a yard should do it) and feathers and trims of your choice. Buttons, beads, anything sparkly.
Carol will have some samples of hats that have been made from scratch, some that have been thrifted and modified. We will also cover making fascinators.
We need a minimum of four prepaid students for the class to run. Should there not be enough one week before the class is to run, we will need to cancel and refund those who have paid.
Steampunk 101: Outfits, Weapons and Accessories! & Corsets 101
Date: Sunday, October 23rd
Time: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Place: Textile Center of MN
Teachers: Laura Ulak, Carol Strand, members of the Wench Posse
Cost: MNSOC Members $7 / Non-Members $10
Not sure what Steampunk is? Confused about Corsetry? Then this is the class for you!
The class starts with a fashion show showing various Steampunk “personas.” Then these outfits will be deconstructed and you will learn how to create a similar persona. This will be followed by a question and answer period.
After the Q&A there will be a break for 10 minutes and then the class will resume with an overview of Victorian corsetry. We will discuss various types of corsets, construction of corsets and the materials used. We will provide you with a handout detailing places you can purchase supplies or already made corsets.

Under-16 should have parent available to assist. Photo shows one possibility (display sample, styles will vary according to student choices). Some tools provided, but you are highly encouraged to bring your own. Bring your own supplies if you have them (see list). Some supplies will be available for sale (see list for prices if you need to purchase). If you *know* you’ll need supplies, please let Missy know so she can plan for it.
